Motorola is in the midst of a massive corporate restructuring after a series of product failures and a shifting market for technology products. Motorola was once a major player on the cell phone market with issues such as the ultra-thin RAZR. The RAZR was introduced during the fourth quarter of 2004, and it sold more than 110 million units during its popular run. Since the issue of the RAZR, Motorola has found it difficult to regain a hold on the American marketplace.
Motorola failed to improve its position with the issue of the ROKR, an Apple and Motorola partnership that attempted to combine cell phones with MP3 players back in 2005. The first mobile phone that was integrated with Apple’s iTunes player proved to be another failure. Even though Motorola has not had a successful cell phone in years America loves a comeback story, and Motorola just might have one with the Atrix.
The Motorola Atrix is the first pone to also be a laptop computer. The combination is made possible by the NVIDA dual-core Tegra 2 chip. The device has already been haled as innovative by PC Magazine. The Atrix is a unique system in that it runs two operating systems: Google’s Android 2.2 and a version of Linux. To turn the Atrix into a full computer, Motorola is releasing a Laptop Doc that is about the same size as the MacBook Air. The Atrix works well as a computer because it has the power of one. It has 1GB ram, 16GB of storage space and a MicroSD slot.
Will the Atrix make Motorola a player on the mobile phone market again? Perhaps, even if it is difficult to imagine it repeating the success of the RAZR. For Motorola, the Atrix is more than just a new product. It is a hope that the future for the American technology company can be bright once again.
